Insulation, maybe? We tried it too, but it was in the wrong location. I've read that cold rooms should be in the northeast corner, usually the coolest place in a house.

Early this spring, we insulated the top four feet of our cellar. We're hoping that will keep it a bit warmer when it's bitterly cold outside, and somewhat cooler in summer. It did stay at about 60 degrees all summer, so we'll see. We're also hoping to eventually insulate the ceiling. I don't know how well it will work yet, but I'm totally delighted to finally have a wooden floor in it, instead of dirt.

Is this room located in your basement? I have mine within a corner wall of my basement, the other two walls and ceiling are well insulated. Installed is one long intake pipe that comes down and runs along the floor, this draws the cold air down to the floor, the other is very short intake pipe that helps with air exchange. These vents are closed when it becomes very cold outside, when bitter cold strikes, the door is then cracked open a bit to prevent the room from dropping below freezing. I have been very happy with having a cold room within the house.

Terry, it is in the middle of a insulated and heated basement. The pipe to exhaust the air out has a fan installed now. The room is about 4 feet wide and the pipe juts into the room almost 3 & 1/2 feet. Could this be the problem?? We did insulate the room, maybe not well enough. also these pipes travel 10 feet within the basement from the outside before they reach the cold room.

You might wish to insulate that long run of vent entering into your coldroom  and also if possible relocate the room to an exterior wall. HereÂs some photos showing how the vent work is set up within my room, it really draws in the cold outside air and is already pretty cool in there! IÂm now in need of adding some shelving.

PS ... please don't tell my you possibly have infloor heating within the room? I had a neighbor that had such and her room was basically useless for storing root veggies.

When you put those pipes in, don't forget to cover the outside opening with some kind of wire mesh. We didn't think of it when we made our ill-fated cold room - mice!

Yes, and also remember to close off the vents when the outside temperature really plummets.
