Check your tomatoes....usually if they have been frozen, they will be mealy or mushy and you wouldn't want to eat them. If they still feel solid....I would think that they would be ok.

As for strawberries....I have had better success leaving them till early spring to transplant. This gives them more time to establish their root system to get through their first winter. Plants that I have transplanted in the fall usually don't survive the winter here.

Did you have red and green tomatoes on the plants yet? I know that you can freeze tomatoes that are red and use them as you need to in making sauces. I would refreeze them immediately in the freezer or make sauce today. Green ones that are not ready...what about a green tomato sauce? I don't make that but I'm sure someone out there does. Those I'd get into the freezer immediately also if not making anything today with them.

Hi fraser. Welcome to the forum. Frozen tomatoes, when I have let them freeze, tend to get a transparent look to them and they usually get quite mushy. They generally cannot tolerate frost unless you have a really warm area (microclimate) in your yard. Have you been covering them at night? Generally speaking, they can tolerate light frosts (-1/-2° C.) if they are covered by sheets or blankets at night. Unfortunately, we got nailed this year with frost right at our "normal". My first frost date, in Edmonton, averages on Sept. 23 and we got hit right about then. In a good year, frost can be expected to hold off for another week or so.

I'm not an expert on fall planting, but in my Master Gardener program, I was led to believe that you can transplant any perennial up until the ground freezes. However, personally, I think that plants need to establish their root systems in their new home before freeze-up. I would wait until spring, at this point. A month ago may have been a better time. Strawberries will establish very quickly in the spring and should produce that year after transplanting.

This is just my opinion and I'm sure some of the more experienced gardeners can give you better advice on the strawberries. However, from experience, I can tell you about frozen tomatoes. LOL
