Don't know what causes it but I eat them all the time. They don't taste any different.

Oh my! Everybody that eats them like that dies. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but sooner or later. Water is another thing I avoid for the same reasons.

I think the "warts" are spots where the fruit has been damaged, probably due to insect attack, and the plant responds by blocking off the damaged area by creating the "wart". Bacterial or a virus attack could trigger the same response. At any rate, trim off the ugly area and enjoy the squash. Eating the blemished area wouldn't hurt you at all, but we all prefer veggies that look nice, so just trim out the ugly spots and enjoy.

While everyone is smarter than I am you can guarantee you will die if you eat them...I can, and for zero charge evaluate your produce to make sure you won't possibly be in a high risk for 'Sudden Adult Sleep Death'....I am one of the first people in the country offering this and offer my service to my friends for near nothing. Ever wonder why some people only post once on garden webs? SASD....a given..coroner will not accept not knowing in this day and age, yet I do.

When they free me for having an open thinking mind they should incapsulate those with a closed mind.....and those really need to send their veggies to me for analysis....so darn important....and it is nearly FREE!
