I haven't checked out this forum before but am glad I saw a posting for it. I mainly go to the roses forum.

I live in Anchorage and tried my first ever veggie garden. I hope to do much better next year since I made a lot of mistakes.

We tried growing some sunflowers along the back fence but none took. Next year we will start them early then plant them and hopefully that will make the difference.

My tomatoes must have become mixed up with the herbs since I thought I planted the herbs along the front yard but have some tomatoes growing. So finding a way to label the seed starting thing is a must. How does everyone do it?

Our carrots were good and our snap peas were good too. We want to find some berry bushes (raspberry, blueberry) to add for next spring as well.

I always plan to collect seeds but forgot about it until too late. Is there a good site to look at about seed saving?

I have some nice roses growing but most took it hard this spring with the early thaw then cold weather. Knockout is proving to be hardy but not vigorous. It is blooming it's head off even though it is only about a foot tall and this is at the end of summer. I forget which it is, it is either Evelyn or Bill Warriner but it is proving hardy so far. I accidently killed all my potted roses (about 40!!) so decided to hold off buying any new ones for a bit.

I look forward to reading everyone's posts and seeing what works for eveyrone!

    Hi Maria and a big welcome to the Far North forum. We're a good bunch on this forum and you will find many knowledgeable people here. I've learned soooo much from everyone and in so many areas that I had no experience in.

    A good seed saving site is linked below. I use it right now on almost a daily basis. Hope it helps.

    I'm so sorry to hear about your roses. I can only imagine your heartbreak at having 40 potted roses decease on you. I'd cry if I had 40 of anything not make it, but 40 potted roses - wow.

    Hello Maria,
    Welcome to the party!
    I find that with my cool summers that I often have a lot in common with the Alaskan posters.
    Forty dead potted roses- OUCH!
    My Morden Sunrise roses just keep going and going. ItÂs my first year with this rose so I am waiting to see how it does over winter. It seems to be one that does either very well or very badly. Some people refer to Morden Sunrise as a mildew magnet.
    My Morden RubyÂs blooms are easily damaged by wet weather, which for me has been most of the summer since the beginning of July.
    My rugosa roses Scabrosa, Rosieraie de LÂHay and White Rugosa have been reliable for years and are fragrant.
    Lois HoleÂs Rose Favorites, ISBN 1-55105-079-X, has been a good basic guide for my area.

    The raspberries I have are "Killarny" and "Boyne." For flavor I prefer the "Killarny"

    Thanks, Ian. It appears I am also having trouble with the op. link URL function. Everytime I put The Seed Site link in, nothing would show up, so I did it again. I guess it must have been five times before it showed up. My apologies. I usually check my links and this time I didn't.

    I tried again and it came up five times again. But I whittled it down to one and now it works (I think). LOL

    Thanks for the welcome. I will read the posts and see if I have any questions not answered after that...

    I was part of the rose society for a bit but always plan to join it again someday. Do you plan get-togethers or meet at events or??
