I returned home from Holidays tonight - and my backyard is overcome with aphids! I think they are past knocking them off with a jet of water, so what is the next best thing to try to control them. Now I don't get too worked up about a few aphids around, but there are lots of adult ones and the underside of all my rose bushes and a few other shrubs are covered with eggs. The second part of the question, is there anything to do next year preventitively so I don't have this outbreak?

I've also noticed a serious explosion of the little bug***s in the past few days. They are even thick in the air, who knows how many I swallowed over the weekend! My (very few) plants are also covered with them. This year seems to be especially bad, any thoughts why?

I spray my flowers that I don't want them to eat down to nothing with a mixture of 2-1 Water-Sunlight dishsoap. It kills them and they won't eat the leaves.
Unfortunately it doesn't work on humans... so I try not to be outside if at all possible!
Think it's our summer we've had, really hot then cooling quickly

The miserable little things are all over, aren't they. I had to put my sunglasses on walking down main street because they kept flying in my eyes. I've noticed everything is just plastered - green ones on the roses, black ones on the thistles - almost makes me wish for F**** just to get rid of them.

They are rotten little 'buggers' aren't they? I grew 'pink gypsy' gypsophilia (mini baby's breath) this year in pots, cute little mounds of tiny flowers. My sister said they produce a lot of seed, so end of July I went out to 'brush' them with my hand while holding a margarine container beneath to capture my seeds. Wow, the amount of little bitty bugs was amazing! Aphids and who knows what...baby aphids? So instead of collecting seed I brushed them every day for a week, knocking these bugs to the concrete (plants in containers on driveway), and the plants appeared to grow even better! Maybe I will try million bells again next year and 'shake' them up more often earlier in the season, that might help since I've given up on them because of the aphids sucking them dry before I know what's happening and can save 'em.

The year one of my kids was in grade one they rec'd a spruce seedling for Arbor Day, and the following summer I noticed the tree was full of ants, which made me check further and yep, there were lots of black juicy aphids. So I mixed a bit of dishsoap in water, and for good luck a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol, and sprayed the tree down, waited 15 minutes and used a magnifying glass to check that the aphids were dead (yep) and then sprayed with fresh water to rinse everything off (tree was small) and this appeared to do the job, tree has not been infested like that again.
