Mine come back every year and i've never protected them.

I had one that died back every year until if stayed dead.

Are yours in pots right now? Last year when i didn't have time to plant mine properly, I dug a trench, put each pot in and covered everything with soil making sure that the pot was also well covered. Before I 'planted' the pots, I made sure to water well. The trench was on the south side of a shed and I never lost anything. Marg

I have the little ones in pots and was just wondering if they will be ok to plant in the garden in like October. Or maybe I should do what you suggest, Marg. Just put pot and all in. :) I guess I'll have to take my chances. Some are tougher than others, I know, cause I have a few already that have survived our winters.

Apparently we are back to seasonal temps now. Indian summer was a hot week long! :)

put them all in the ground IN their pots . Bury them all the way to the top of the pots and cover them with leaves or whatever for winter.I've never overwintered them inside- too much work. I've done this hundreds of times with various plants with great sucess.
Once they are in the ground give them a push into the ground in fall---many don't make it for people as the plant gets heaved up with frosts and often then die. In the spring you can plant as normal.
If they heave (once in the ground and not in pots) in the spring gently dig up and reset into the soil. This often happens and if they aren't reset into the ground the stock is weaker and the plant is not as strong or appealing to look at -chances are in the next season it will die off.

Thanks Lois. I haven't had many heucheras until this fall and the ones I do have seem to be there for good. I only put them in pots cause they are really small. I have beds ready for them...???
