I'm not in Calgary but here in Edmonton I only apply one shot of lawn fertilizer per year, around late May or thereabouts, as I don't want to have to cut it any more than necessary (which this rainy year means I've had to cut it twice a week, all summer and right up to now). I tried to eliminate fertilizer altogether, and it worked okay for a year or two, then the weeds really began to invade the lawn. So I give one good fertilizing in Spring, that's it.

May and October are the only two times you should fertilize grass in our zone.

I find the same thing as Don, if you don't fertilize at least once a year the weeds take over really bad.

I bought a wheeled spreader and only use the slow release stuff. It seems to keep the grass from going too crazy.

I love a lush, green lawn, so I don't mind fertilizing, watering and cutting it! :-)

I guess I should apply a winterizing fertilizer in October and then be done with it.

I use Scott's Winter Care. I find the Scott's granular stuff to be the best. The CIL stuff doesn't seem to do anything.
