Being rootbound hasn't affected maturity of my figs. I'd suspect it's about heat units, or lack thereof. I believe you had a late cold spring and cool summer. Not enough heat to ripen many figs. Varieties that ripen early, a warm location, a greenhouse, or other techniques that extend the season on either end will ripen more figs.

Rob you mention fruit production started late.
So they would therefore ripen at a later date weather permitting.

Here in my zone pea size figs need to be on plant before end of June.
If not what happens is the cooler night and daytime temperature sometimes in mid to late Sept extends the period in the ripening stage.

Example have some figs that were swelling and changeing color now in a stall period because of recent daytime temps not getting out of the 50s which are mid October temperatures.

I had pea sized by the end of June, just incredibly slow growth and they stalled for most of August. They are in tubs on movers dollies, about 4 inches above the asphalt of my driveway. I figure the asphalt would retain heat through the night.

Disappointing to say the least.

Do I need to wait for them to drop leaves before cutting back and root pruning?

when our fig plants need root pruning its done in late winter.

There is still some hope for ripe fruit in your area as some of those fruit may be 80-90 days old and due to cooler weather this season and now shorter daylight hours with more rain etc they are taking more days to ripen than usual at least here they are.

Exciting time is when one goes out to check plant next day after seeing fruit at its same size not doing anything for months suddenly swelling and changing color .
