Hi,

I'm planning to put in 2 figs that I intend to espalier against a side porch (masonry wall for about 2 feet, then a railing). The wall is about 12 feet long - so 6 feet of width for each fig.

My first question is about the type of Figs I'm intending. I was planning to put in a Celesete as well as fig grown locally called Briguglio which is a local heirloom variety.

Anyway, I was wondering if any here had experience with the Briguglio and/or knew anything about what more common types it might be close to. Any help with this would be great.

My second question is about the espalier part of my plan. Basically, I was thinking of growing a triple-U cordon style for each fig. I was thinking that if I hard trim (nearly all the way down) one side of each U every year, that would sprout in the Spring for the main crop,while the side I left mostly intact would develop a breba crop. I would alternate which side I hard trimmed each year. Growing against the wall (E/SE facing) would give it some winter protection and also allow me to easily put hay or other insulation against the lower part for added protection. But the big reason for the espalier is I just don't have a lot of room.

Thoughts?

And of course, if you think I should be using totally different fig varieties for this please let me know. Especially if I should just be choosing figs for a main crop if I'm trying to espalier them.
