None. Put it in your garage and water it once a month through the Winter. Don't worry about it getting too big 'til that time comes, then prune it to your space limitations.

Or, you could park on the street :-)

I was wondering about something, like maybe putting a pot in an unheated closet that had exposure to say an outside wall. I have kept bulbs like amaryllis in dormancy in a closet that I just kept closed and they were bagged a couple times to insure that I didn't inadvertently heat them up while looking for a pillow :) I know that fig trees would get much bigger over time, but it maybe that you have big closets or a spare bedroom that you can close a vent on. I can even see creating a micro climate behind a curtain or placed in a cold corner of the house. I know the people here would have much more knowledge of figs, but I have grown many plants in pots and wintered them even when their needs were unusual. A little creativity. If you are unsure about the storage method, you could probably strike cuttings or put cuttings in the fridge until spring to keep from losing a cultivar. Hope this helps :)

A very general rule-of-thumb for wintering figs:
Below 20*F; they may die...
Above 40*F; they may break dormancy
(irrespective of lighting)...

Good one, Dave: (Why waste all that good fig-storing area by putting a car in it?)

Yup ... my two car garage turns into a one car garage come November :^)

What about keeping it outside with a sort of electric blanket? Does anyone do this?

I think my best option is to try to overwinter it in the house with lots of light. Or give up.

I think my garage is warmer than 40 degrees due to the heated driveway.

I wish parking on the street were an option, but it really isn't because my neighborhood is just too dense to expect to find a spot within a couple blocks consistently. While I USED to put up with that hassle all the time, now that I have a kid, I don't want to even for a fig plant, LOL. DH parks at a garage a block and half away because you really can't expect to find a spot on the street.

I also wish I had some outside wall closets, but don't. Not too many cold spots, either, because being on the 4th floor means I don't even have to turn on the heat in winter, yet it still only gets down to 65 at the coldest.

Unless I can use an electric blanket, I may have to give up on the fig idea. Do I need to protect the foliage, or can I just keep the pot warm?
