Bees and bugs are fine with me ... but, I don't like bears! Last year one had crossed my yard and both the dog and I freaked! Well, actually I thought it was neat to see ... though, just a bit too close for comfort!

Absolutely loved these pictures -- thanks for sharing. The Fish & Wildlife folks here in Anchorage are on a perpetual and seemingly fruitless campaign to persuade people that birdfeeders here in the non-hibernation months are downright dangerous. I had an email exchange last spring with one of them questioning whether there was any way to hang a birdfeeder so that it wouldn't attract bears, sort of the way campers stake up their food packs. He assured me that black bears in particular (we have grizzlies to worry about here too) were superb athletes and could -- and would -- get to just about anything. I was skeptical, but obediently took in my feeders for the season. Looks like he was right!

For years, the state had been instructing backpackers in the high-peaks area of the Adirondacks to hang their food and often provided sturdy wires in the more popular camping areas. It seldom worked as the bears usually were able to outwit the human mind. (The promise of a free meal gets their creative juices going.)

This year, it is mandatory that all food carried into the High Peaks wilderness is in bear-proof canisters.
