hollyhocks blooming

At last years Tampa swap I got some hollyhock seeds (Tom?). I planted them right in the yard and not only did they come up, they're blooming. I love them!

I'm guessing it must be the Vietnamese type?

Can you get seeds from them? (I know nothing about hollyhocks, lived in Florida my whole life, lol) If so, anyone want them for the swap?

Nice! I wouldn't think they'd grow in the south. My grandma had some in front of her kitchen. I finally got seeds for them. I've never seen them growing around here.

I've never seen Hollyhocks in Florida- how exciting!

I've live here for 68 years and there are things out there that are new me that I just shake my head! I would think once the bloom is done you would have seeds? Go for it!

Hi Lori, yes, it was me. They are Vietnamese and came from Christine in DeLand, I think. I can bring more seeds if anyone wants to try them, I have about 20 seeds left. Although I'm only 20 miles from you they didn't do well over here next to the Bay.... :-(

For the Orlando area folks, I was at the Polasek museum and gardens in Winter Park on Sunday and they have a nice bunch of these coming along. Same color as Lori's, too.

Do the Vietnamese ones come in other colors?

I've seen the Vietnamese hollyhocks for sale from Colorfields at both the Tropiflora and USF sales. But I never bought them cause I knew hollyhocks don't grow in Florida!

good morning, i am starting a 2 acre garden on my parents ranch near clewiston fl, and i have taken a liking to these hollyhocks. i first saw them at a local nursery down here in miami, and after reading into them i think i should give the vietnamese a try. does anyone know where i can purchase some vietnamese seeds?

I purchased a pink hollyhock from a Leu's Garden plant sale about 5 years ago. They called it a tropical hollyhock. They will produce plenty of seeds for you. I just grab some of the seed pods and break them open and spread the seed and they re-emerge again in the late fall. Mine is in bloom now.

I don't know where you buy seeds, sorry, and mine haven't produced any seed heads yet so I can't send any. I'm almost positive you can buy the plants at the upcoming sales at Tropiflora and USF.

DH got them for me from a vender at the St Pete farmer's market two years ago. They did so so in Clearwater. I did get some seeds the first year and have a scraggy plant coming up in a pot. They are kind of fun.

They sell them @ Lowes in Jax. I've started a few of the "Black" hollyhocks...since my black poppies didn't come through...grrrr.

Sorry, that should say: They sell them *blooming* @ Lowes but they are light pink. You can buy the seeds from Burpee @ Lowes, and they are the black variety. :)

I just stumbled upon this info. So glad to see it! I know the original discussion began over 3 years ago, but I was wondering if you still have hollyhock seeds available? I'm in Bradenton and don't know of anyone that has these seeds. I've heard the mail order variety will not do well here and that it is best to get seeds directly from a local.
