Daylilies are usually as tough as leather. I give mine no special care even if they are first year plants. I've never lost one yet

It's good to mulch new plants or toss some leaves on them after the ground freezes. I usually fertilize my daylilies late in the summer to give them a little fuel for the winter.

I have some daylilies in 1 gal. pots that I bought on sale ($3-5). Can I overwinter these in their pots just placed on the ground with some straw mulch around them? I don't have the garden space right now to sink all the pots in the ground. What do you think? I am in S. Ontario, zone 5b. Since I didn't pay very much for these, I won't be too concerned if they "croak" over the winter, but I am hoping the majority will survive, even just to donate to our local plant sale in May/2011.
