November flowers

Wow... November already! Did a walk around my yard and I see I still have a few native harebells blooming (not really photo-worthy) plus the last flowers on my Jackmannii superba. This clematis is in a very sheltered area beside the front door and started blooming in mid-June... 4.5 months ago! It was at its prime in July and August, then gradually faded, but there's still a few very scattered blooms remaining, this one's in the best shape:

Nice Don555! I hope mine blooms as much as yours one day. I got one amazing flush then the occasional bloom.

I have a few annuals still blooming but to damp out to share.

    Keep the pics coming!

I found yet one petunia blossom hanging on upon a self sown seedling tucked next to a large rock. I have yet to dig out the petunias I winter over in the garage and take cuttings from come spring, so will do that yet today, it's otherwise rather costly to always be buying cutting grown petunias each year.

It's a nice day out there yet again, we're on borrowed time!

I still have some blooms on my New York aster, and a couple of slightly battered looking roses on my Emily Carr. Besides that, everything has quit. My clematis are definitely long since done!

There's still a couple of blooms on one phlox. Nothing else. I was out of town on the weekend and saw petunias blooming where i was. My aunt and uncle still have their carrots in the garden and dill that hasn't frozen.

Only thing now left out in our garden is some parsley, I had rounded up the storage cabbage yesterday. Got those petunias dug and potted up and these include, 'Johnny Flame', 'Bubblegum', 'Select Blue Stardust' (a really cool looking blue and white flower) and three types of double Wave petunias with real purdy blooms.

    Very nice Don!

I've see some pansies around, they love cool weather and light frost doesn't kill them.

Well the rain finally broke yesterday and I had my little helper doing some fall clean up.

All shot with iPhone and I should have checked focus on a few...oh well any late season blooms are good. I missed a few as my helper decided we needed to do something else as pictures were boring lol.

My little helper with lobelia, bacopa and yellow tagetes marigold

    Tiarrella Candy Striper

    Coneflower

    Nicotiana

    Swiss Giants

    Dianthus

    One of many petunia's

    Emily Carr

    Chocolate Joe Pye Weed

    Johnny Jump Up

I agree, we are on borrowed time.......

twrosz - I am interested in your technique to overwinter petunias.

SCG, I'm envious of the color you still have there, in a few days time it sounds as if the dominating color here will be WHITE :(

As for keeping petunias over the winter ... dig with a good amount of root system intact and cut back the tops to about 4 inches and pot in good decent soil or potting mix being sure to keep at the same depth as they had been in the ground, water sparingly, though do not allow to dry out ... keep about 2 to 4 C over the winter months and then bring into warmth in March and take cuttings when new growth is about 3 inches long, they root easily.

I have a hosta very weirdly blooming (several scapes) right now, even though its leaves have been killed by frost. Took a photo but photobucket is being junk and won't upload it. Also my petunias are still struggling along, and my snapdragons look perfect.

Thanks twrosz I was curious. I think I need to get on building that cold storage. Was going to this year for my dahlia tubers BUT we got below freezing unexpectedly and they froze.....

Northspruce - yes my snaps are doing well too, unfortunately I stopped deadheading in Sept so most have stopped blooming in favour of seed pods.....I sort of gave up then...big mistake and won't happen again.

Soon, it will be white here too in terms of snow. But, Little Gem Magnoila grandiflora is my white from May to December.

SCG, I never deadhead my snaps and they don't fizzle out. I've bought a couple of different types from Stokes recently and they've performed really well. I grew Twinny Bronze this year. Beautiful colour blend.

Northspruce - all my snaps, while nice and green stopped blooming. I grew a twinney series a couple years ago and really liked them, too.

njoasis, that Little Gem Magnoila grandiflora is a beauty!

Snapdragon 'Bronze Dragon' is still looking great with its dark shiny foliage, the two tone pink blooms are a nice contrast ... reminds me that I need to dig these to keep overwinter, cold and snow is almost upon us!

Twrosz that is some nice foliage! You are really making me think about building a spot to overwinter stuff.

Those are really nice Terry! I would not have guessed that they were snapdragons at all. :)

I just got back from a trip near the Grass Lands National Park area and there had been crocus's blooming and lots of very large puff ball remains, nice weather and fall rains I assume were the cause.

SouthCountyGuy, if the ground is not frozen the dahlia tubers can still be dug up and saved for next year. If they are in pots I bring the pots in to a cool dark basement room for the winter. If in the ground I dig the tubers after the foliage is killed by frost and swish them in a bucket of water to remove excess dirt then let them dry before storing in a paper bag with wood shavings in the same dark room. Your helper is by far the loveliest flower in your garden.

The last two days have been spent cutting back perennials and cleaning up the garden beds. The last of the open clematis blooms succumbed to an earlier frost but one opened a fresh bloom today. I consider it a little gift to remind me that the blooms will come again. Late blooming Fireworks golden rod looks nice. Tall sedums still looking good. Some mums still have some fresh blooms nestled amongst the low foliage. An aster in a protected spot is still blooming and yesterday I saw some autumn crocus opening. Annual blue salvia 'Victoria' is still hanging in there. Pansies looking good. My potted snapdragons are blooming only because they are in a medium sized pot which I have brought inside nights. Next week even the days will be below freezing so will let them go. Brugmansia were dug up and potted in 10 inch containers. Those with buds were left in the unheated garage and have been blooming since late September. Yesterday I brought the last two into the house. Their booms are very fragrant!

Mnwsgal - thanks, she loves to help when her older sister is in school. Unfortunately I had dug my tubers up and was drying them on the picnic table when we unexpectedly dropped to -3C and they turned very soft and mushy.

Temps are supposed to plummet to -17C this week so I think I am best pulling everything up today. Sigh...... It is now really over.

SCG, I was afraid that might be what happened. Lost some tubers the same way many years ago.

We won't be that low but highs only in the 20s next week so our season has ended as well.

Got some last photos before the so-called snow tomorrow...

    Late harvest of swiss chard:

The last poppy in the garden, hanging in there!

I am very impressed with the bloom length of this fellow. Not sure if it is Baby's breath? It has been blooming since June, lovely delicate pale pink flowers.

Not quite flowers, but sedums & succulent garden is looking good. I am very happy with how far everything has established this year.

Loving sedum rupestre Angelina this time of year...

Precious geraniums were moved inside to overwinter:

And an unexpected indoor amaryllis bloom for late fall:

nice pics prairie_northrose! I was hoping to get out today and do the same. I think I am kinda screwed as it is raining and the temp is dropping....Methinks all my annuals et al will be there in the spring LOL.
