PAD -- Do You Have It?

The new plants director at a major mail order company confesses to having PAD:

Plant Acquisition Disorder. The symptoms manifest themselves as:

I want it, I want it now, I want it in every color, and I want every cultivar.

Are you also obsessed with plant acquisition?

I must confess that I'm guilty!!! specially when it comes to lillies, cannas, dahlias and now alocasias and colocasias :) I'm sure next year it will I'll add more things to my addiction list =)

I hate to admit it but I have it too, I prefer to call them "My Collections' LOL.

Does it count if I want more and more colors and cultivars of plants, but not necessarily every one? LOL

I'm with Annette, though, I do like my collections, and filling spaces.

I'm very fond of these large families:
    Genus: Aster---daisy-like
    Genus: Campanula----bell-like

yep!! My hubby wants to know if there is a cure?

I'm on the wagon! Though there will be a slight reprieve the third week of September, when plants I ordered two months ago are due to arrive.

Guilty as charged, but I don't want to be cured!

Oh, yeah! I have been much better the last two years though.

I keep reminding myself, I have to plant what I order..that slows me down. Also the streamlining I plan to do.

I still am very attracted to daylily and iris websites and visit them a lot.

    Does this count?

We just got home from Lowe's where they had gotten in a big delivery of plants...

5 pots of coneflowers loaded with buds
5 pots of rocket snapdragons (which will overwinter for me)
    3 pots of asters
    3 pots of mums
    5 pots of purple petunias
    1 pot of homestead verbena

I really wanted some purple fountain grass for my fall planters, but they didn't have any...also want some purple haze agastache...I will be driving to Sanford to BB this week.

But, DH and I did pull 3 abelias, a weeping cherry (demolished by Japanese beetles every year) from our cottage garden to make room for these perennials and annuals. We were constantly trimming the abelias, so we moved those along the parking area. I had to dig out a lot of stella d'oro daylilies and scabiosa as the crabgrass was growing all though the roots. I didn't want to re-introduce the crabby grass to the garden, so those had to get shovel-pruned. I love a blank canvas! :-)

Cameron which coneflowers did you get? Remember the deal I got on the two Echinaceas, well they are blooming now. Summer Sky sure has been pretty and such a big flower. After Midnight the same, big flower no deformation on either one so I guess it depends where you get them from. They finally put a price tag on them $11.95 so I'm thinking my two plants for $5.00 was a smart buy.
One or two of my Asters are starting to show color, they're about two weeks behind schedule. Which ones did you get, this Aster addict is dying to know.

    Cameron,
I got my Homestead verbena from Lowe's this summer. It is a great multi-tasker, as it can spread and bloom at the same time. It is very pretty. I almost didn't get it, because the bloom is a different color than the ones I used to grow.

After we get our repaired shed painted, I am thinking about going ahead and planting some rudbeckia, coneflowers, and asters and not waiting until fall. I don't know if it's OK to plant asters this late or not.

Annette, I'm glad your Echinaceas are doing well. Post some pics of them and the asters. Mine aren't blooming yet, but look like they want to. Do you have a favorite aster? Do you have lots of butterflies on your asters?

I sought a second opinion from my DH and he says yes, I've got it. I'm on the "big river in Egypt" - de Nile.

Lately I've had more VAD (vegetable aquisition disorder) and FAD (fruit ....)... probably because of the drought. I'm sure it will change when we can plant more in our backyard!!

Sue... I have quite a few Asters in fact they are one of my favorite flowers, I guess I have about 50 give or take a few. It's hard to pick a favorite as I like them all. I have a lot of named varieties in all colors. A few years ago I imported about 3 dozen from the UK, lost 3 or 4 to a very wet winter but still have lots.
The echinacea are a new addiction of mine right now I have about 18 varieties heeled in the Aster bed, picked up several last summer and the rest this spring. This will be their first winter here in the garden so we'll see which ones make it through.
I'm thinking of revamping the Aster bed, adding beside the Echinacea some of the others that have daisy type flowers, Shastas, Rudbeckias etc. We'll see how ambitious I am in the spring :o).
I'll post a few pics of the Asters when more of them are flowering, towards the end of September.
I cut most of the flowers off the coneflowers today in hopes this will help the roots establish themselves before winter. Some of these newer varieties don't seem to be that hardy.

So, that's what's wrong with me!! LOL. I have a severe addiction to daylilies and bulbs right now. I just planted my first daylilies about a month ago and now I want everyone I see! My hubby wouldn't even let me pop in Lowe's the other day for a minute...that was probably a good thing ;)

I didn't intend to buy, just to look when DH wanted to stop at HD on the way home from his doctor's appt. I thought they might have some echinacea, the pretty colors. They had huge pots of huge coneflowers, all dry and nearly dead.

What they did have was Heliconias. No prices on them. Turned out they were only $4.99 when I was already at the cash register with someone waiting behind me and DH waiting, too.

I remember that somebody here has Heliconias, is it Annie?

I am told that I am not allowed to get any more plants until I have gotten the ones I have already bought into the ground. However, that does not hold me back. I have been known to hide them at a neighbor's house because I just cannot face my husband's mild frown but severely raised eyebrow. Part of my problem is that the nurserymen and women put out different stuff at different times of the season, based upon what is blooming at that time of the year. If I see it and want it, I have to get it because it might not be there when I change my mind and go back for it. It's just like the Costco phenomenon in that way.

One of the best things about being divorced (aside from not having to cook dinner every night) is that there is no one around to tell me I am spending too much on plants :-) And since I work for a grower/wholesaler with a hugely generous employee discount, there's always a new plant or two each week. Yesterday I just happened to stop at a local garden center for some bulbs (which I can't get from work) and managed to come home with a cart full of plants from their fall sale. How did that happen??!!

The issue I have with PAD now is that my garden is already overly full and any new acquisitions require some serious editing of existing plantings or must be suitable for containers. It always seems to work :-)
