Do you think they might be fruit flies? I usually have a ton of them by late summer but they taper off in the fall. There are ways of cutting down on them, but i've never been able to get rid of them completely.

Safer's Sticky Strips work great for gnats, aphids and whiteflies.

Ken Beatie had a suggestion that worked for me. They breed in the sink drain. Pour some cooking oil in each one last thing in the evening and let sit overnight.Make sure you pour all around the rim so it runs down all the surfaces. Do this a couple of nights in a row, then again in a few days. Also try putting the compost pail outside for 24 hours when it is freezing hard.

I've heard about this, that they breed in the sink drain, but i just don't understand that when you're running water all the time. You'd think they'd be washed away. I've never seen any in or around the sink either. I do wash my compost pail extra-well when there are a lot of fruit flies and put bleach in it. That slows things down a bit, but it isn't long till they're back in full force. I'm willing to try the cooking oil thing, though. I'll do it next summer when they get bad - someone remind me, okay? :)

This year with bringing in the garden produce, the numbers of fruit flies had gone wild within the house and garage. I was told to simply put some wine in a small bowl along with a squirt of dish drops, it worked awesome! I have now also placed such within the front window where the fungus gnats are a problem around the houseplants.
