If you're in zone 8 your fig will probably do best right in the ground. I'm in zone 8a and figs grow faster than weeds here with no winter die back. I'm guessing your daughter found the fig locally, so it should be an appropriate variety for your area. Keep in mind that figs grow fast and large and like lots of sun. Don't expect much for the first two years, you'll get a few figs but the they probably won't taste like much. Our fig put out about 5 figs in the second year and we were very disappointed with the flavor. This year the tree was covered with figs and they tasted great.

She apparently bought it at a garage sale so it was a cutting from someones tree, sadly she can't remember the address.I have moved it to a very large pot and thought I should put it in the greenhouse over the winter then figure out what to do later, should I water it , feed it etc. It is quite tall with a trunk about the thickness of a Sharpie pen, it has five branches that are only about maybe a foot at the most long, with lovely shoots in the axils, then the growing tip is about the same.

It is in excellent condition.

Is there anyway of figuring out how old it is from this.
