Yes, the fig cuttings can be rooted. Fig is the easiest to root but you have to do some reading.

Also it would take a while to grow, and you must be careful with it when its small.
If they like taking care of things and are patient that is a great gift.
Also, you should be able to sell them to others as well.

I have the advantage of living in a warm climate. For me I just put the cuttings in a gallon plastic milk container with the spout cut open to allow room to remove the cutting the following spring. I did nothing for the cutting but keep it in the shade all the time and made sure there was enough water in the container. Did not even bring it in when we had our light freeze. In your area I would at least bring it in when they weather gets too cold. But here I just forgot it was out there until this last spring. I had roots like a small mop by the time I planted it in soil. I have read how they have this long process of cutting bundling, digging a hole in the ground below the freeze line, digging back up etc. For myself this was my first and successful try. So I say I would have to try any and all ways, that is the fun of learning. May your efforts be wonderful.

A 20 year old fig tree should have suckers (little trees around the base), digging those in early spring is practically foolproof.
