Hi Beth, don't have anything anymore he he after the past couple days weather. We had tried to have cabbage collards and broccoli, the broccoli did okay, but the collards and cabbage never caught up, for some reason. They are all ice cubes now, I'm afraid. What are you growing for the winter? Sandy

I know what you mean. This is my first year in NC and I'm having a really tough time trying to figure this climate. I had brocolli and cabbage too as well as lettuce, spinach and green onions from sets. The lettuce and spinach did well until about December when the lettuce went bitter on me. Spinach is still edible and the green onions are great as long as the ground is not frozen and I can pull them out! Broccoli was absolutly eaten up by cabbage loopers and even though I hand picked them everyday it never made more than a three inch head. Cabbage is basically in suspended animation so not sure if it will head up or not. I was hoping to winter garden here without a cold frame but I guess the weather is harsher than I thought. I had broccoli, cabbage, scallions, parsley, and lettuce until about Christmas. It might have held on longer into January, I'm not sure - we ate it all!
I also had spinach, mustard greens, carrots, and mesclun in January. It was going along just fine, I wasn't using a cold frame, just reemay row covers on really cold nights. Had no trouble at all until that weird spell of a week or two of 70-degree weather. As soon as the next cold front came through - and I think it was down into the -teens that night, all those greens just gave up and froze to death. The carrots are still OK, but I guess the greens got acclimated to warm weather??
I have or can make row covers, tunnels, cold frames, etc to protect from cold weather, but how on earth do I protect cold-weather veggies that are acclimated to 15-degree nights from too-warm temps?
