You might go ahead with the root vegetables, especially if you can give them a little protection when frost hits. Even if they don't get big, you could have baby vegetables or let them overwinter for a spring crop. Spinach is very hardy but maybe you don't have enough time for it to grow to size.

Something you might consider is putting in some soil-building crops instead, and then planting veggies in spring. Fava beans, for instance.
