This is my first year of winter gardening, but I am re-seeding as I harvest and intend to do so all winter with the things I have planted in little plastic pop-up greenhouses. I am using Eliot Coleman's book Four Season Harvest as my bible and that's what he does in Maine, so I think that it's not too late.

Starting them inside would be good. Grow them as long as possible in pots/flats then transplant into coldframe/hoophouse. And as katfried said, Eliot Coleman's book will help.

Thanks for the tips =) Eliot Coleman's book IS on my Christmas wishlist, lol... but unfortunately that doesn't help me now!

If ground is workable, you can plant now for harvest in spring and cover with plastic over hoops. I would direct seed to avoid transplant shock (contrast of warm house to cold ground is too extreme).

To get winter harvests you will need to plant earlier in the fall. Plants grow VERY slowly during winter months -- especially little seedlings.

I've had good luck growing pots of arugula indoors in south facing windows. It satisfys that craving to grow something green! Mache grows more slowly so may be a little frustrating to grow indoors.
