What do you read? Do you have a subscription or do you pick up a copy of something when you find it interesting? This isn't meant to be an advertising thread, just curious what other cottage gardeners are reading.

The only one I take now is 'Fine Gardening'. I think it is a very good gardening magazine. I have taken it off and on for over 15 years.

I haven't decided if I will renew or not...not because I don't enjoy it, but once read what do I do with them?

Makes me crazy to have stacks and then just let them set on a shelf.

I subscribe to Fine Gardening, and Country Gardens...love them both.

The only magazine I subscribe to is Victoria. From the magazine rack at the stores, I'll pick up Country Gardens or Find Gardening but only occasionally. Magazines are so expensive now.

Our garden club pays for a subscription for our local library so that we all can read. Might your local library accept them?

My current favorite is not just a magazine, it's membership
in the American Horticultural Society. Six issues of The
American Gardener (very good comprehensive information on many subjects--photos are smaller and less glossy than Fine
Gardening), PLUS discounts at many Botanical gardens and Flower Shows nationwide, PLUS seed exchange, PLUS webinars
    for members.

I also take Fine Gardening and have a tempting discount order on my desk from Horticulture.

I've far too many varieties of garden magazines including fine gardening. What I yearly is to reduce the numbers. I do like the magazines for inspirations and education. So I basically make scrapbooks of pages I like and discard the rest of the magazines. And even then I do discard some scrapbook pages once I'm no longer interested in that design.

You could donate your magazines if you don't wish to cut them up (many waiting rooms, old age homes, etc would benefit) or sell them in garage sales.

No subscriptions anymore (retiree budgeting). However, when we go to Sam's Club I will pick up a magazine for 30% off. Allows me to pick and choose.

I love BBC Gardens Illustrated. If there's an issue that I really, really feel compelled to buy at B&N, I get it. Expensive.

I subscribe to Canadian Gardening, and have for many years. I do keep them, and find I can go back and find interesting things in old copies. I used to subscribe to Gardening Life, but found it to be very Toronto-centric, and leaning to expensive make-overs (but I do miss Marjorie Harris). I also used to get The English Garden(?), but it fell in a budget cut.
I like the idea of buying them for a library!!

I don't subscribe to any magazines at the moment. However, I do like to browse through them at B&N or at the supermarket. Once there, I'll check out any garden mag that catches my eye. My fav is Country Gardens. I own two issues from last year and I flip through them all the time. I also received a complimentary issue of Garden Gate in the mail last year. I enjoy looking at that one, too.

ENGLISH GARDENS. Droooooool. I get Garden Design too, but most of the gardens have more concrete than plants in them, so I'm not going to renew that one.

Cameron, that is the reason I quit a couple of others...budget. I got this one on a cut-rate deal. Speaking of which, just got my renewal for 29.95 for the year, not 12 issues! I won't be renewing unless it gets very much cheaper and I may not then. I would rather invest my money in books, especially bread books. I have 4 shelf-fulls of gardening books already.

gldno1 - me, too! I gave up all my subscriptions and decided that I could purchase a book from alibris or half.com and have a lot more information, just as much inspiring photography, and spend less money. So, now when the bug hits me, instead of purchasing a magazine, I buy a couple of books.

I don't subscribe or buy magazines anymore. In fact I'm looking for a home for all the Gardens West I collected over the years. I've already given all my Fine Gardening, Horticulture, Canadian Gardening and Island Growers(one exception, a picture I took ended up on the cover of one of the issues) away. The only ones I'm keeping are a few issues of Gardeners World and a few Houseplants and Porch Gardens. Since I found the internet and the Garden Forums I have lost interest in them. Mmmmmm, English Gardens seems to be whispering in my ear tho, buy me, BUY ME :o).

RHS 'The Garden' and English gardening. So inspiring and educational.

I get Garden Design but am not renewing it as they seem to only be interested in selling expensive grills and outdoor furniture. Very little to do with plants anymore and almost all articles are on California and the west. They've really gone downhill.

I subscribe to Mississippi Gardener which has gotten noticeably better over the years. I believe most states participate and it's cost is reasonable. I share with my mom on the Gulf Coast. I love many others but they are too expensive for my budget. I have to go to B&N this week, I think I will do some reading there.

I used to LOVE Cottage Living, sadly no longer in print =( They had some great cottage garden layouts.

gottagarden - I notice that too with alot of gardening magazines. All about California gardens or southern gardens. I'd like to New England and the midwest, heck even England herself. Victoria magazines, in the old days, used to visit England and its gardens alot and Italy, plus other countries. Lately, it seems every other issue is about the sea. I don't live by the sea, it's pretty yes, but can't relate very well.
