Momof3 -- I can't wait to hear what everyone says about this. I had a squash bug zoo! Were yours the little round ladybug like critters -- only bigger -- yellow with black spots? I hope they are dead!

No, mine were the stink bug looking ones. They completely took over - couldn't even walk in the garden or they would attack you! I hate them! I try not to spray too many chemicals, but this year I am spraying the area every week starting in March up until I plant hoping to kill the ones that have survived the winter, I am just hoping none of them will live thru this cold.

Anyone else have any REAL good ways to kill them?

I just got really hateful about it. The ladybug like beetles just sit there, so I would fold the squash leaf around them and "POP!" Isn't that horrible? I'd go out and get 20 at a time that way.

I like the idea of going the organic route, but so far, no fabulous predators have decided to snack in my garden. I try not to use chemicals, but those squash guys are bad news.

I wish I could convince the squirrels to eat them. That would solve all my disappearing vegetable problems! :)

bagsmom, the bugs you are talking about are NOT squash bugs, although they will attack members of the cucurbitae family (squash/gourd/cuke) family. what you're talking about is a Mexican Bean Beetle, and they will attack and kill a slew of beans in a matter of a week or two (ask me how I know). more info at the link below.

Nope- it was the Mexican Bean Beetle. Little boogers.

The other menace I have had is the bug that bores into the vine and kills it from inside.

I swear, sometimes it's just easier to go to Kroger. :) (I say that every year, then once it gets warm, I get the Garden Fever all over again!)
