Flowering Carpet & Lavender Simplicity Roses

Does anyone grow the white flowering carpet roses? Are they really disease resistant here? Has anyone seen them anywhere now? In addition, I was looking at the J&P Lavender Simplicity but I don't want to have to spray will these be ok without spray or will they loose too many of their leaves?

I am also looking for a particularly spectacular disease resistant rose to sprawl across a 10 foot section of fence, It is on the southeastern corner of the house (more east than south) so it gets a good amount of sun. It is also about midway down a slope so it may have problems with water running off. I would prefer in not to be pink, but would rather have spectacular pink then mediocre some other color. I just seem to have a lot of pink roses vs other colors. If it is not a repeat bloomer maybe a combo with a clematis or something so I could have more bloom? I have been tied up with other stuff lately and have missed you guys, but I have been afraid to come to the site for fear of starting too many new projects in my mind. We got a fence installed this winter so now I have all these new places screaming to be planted.

Hey Kathy, long time no hear from you.

I'm not a rose expert, but climbing Don Juan (red) does particulary well in the Atlanta humidity and so does climbing New Dawn (pink). The rose guy at Hastings recommended both to me years ago. I got the New Dawn. It never did really well for me because even my sunniest spot didn't have enough sun, but even so it grew to make a good show along a fence. I never tried Don Juan.

Kathy, WE have a beautiful climbing rose on a trelles in front of our house. It has runners on it now that are 15 ft. or more long, and is just beginning to bloom, and will soon be covered with small rich yellow blooms. If I knew how to send pix,I would. I took some beauties of it last year in full bloom. Try the yellow I think you would like it . DAN>

I will look into Don Juan, I think it is an option although it may get too tall for my fence, it is just at split rail 4 ft fence. I read on Wayside Gardens' site that Don Juan is excellent paired with Full Sail which is supposed to be good in the south and have awesome fragrance. Anyone grow that one here? Can it survive without chemicals or will it be plagued with black spot?

Dan I would love to know what the yellow rose is that you are referring to.

I have Don Juan, it gets up to about 6 fee tall, but can easily be trained on a split rail fence. It does get black spot, I spray regularly so it's hard form me to judge how bad it would be if I didn't spray.

I've paired it with Sombrieul, which is a white damask climbing rose.

I think Dan's rose may be a Lady Banks from the description. They are nice, but I think they only bloom once in the spring.

Yes buford, it probably is a Lady Banks, I have one of those and it would be too big for the area I want this one, I am also hoping for a repeat bloomer.

GGG, I have Jean's no Spray list and noticed that there are only a few climbers on it. Although I guess a "rambler" would probably be okay as well for the fence. I thought the Lavender Simplicity is fairly new, isn't it? (so it wouldn't be on the list.) The carpet roses that failed for you--was it blackspot or something else? BTW the yellow rose that I received from you at a trade in 2005 is doing nicely. I remember you told me it would get quite large eventually, do recall the one I mean? You don't know the name do you? You said the original came from someone named Henrietta maybe? The blooms are beautiful.

I have the rose Mozart, which doesn't bloom much beyond the first flush, but it's a rambler that would work well on fencing. It doesn't grow too tall, although it gets BS. You can also just plant a clematis or other vining plant (potato vine, yellow climbing dicentra) so that it covers the leafless rose up. I do that quite a bit (or am trying to!).

The yellow rose came from somewhere like Parks,Wayside or somewhere originally it was their own rose called gold something or other. It's never been sold anywhere else. Yes, my friend Henrietta give her to me. I need to go get some more, I had her strike a whole lot of cuttings. Henriettas' rose is about 10' tall, to the bottom of her roof line and then about 4-6' across.
