It's beautiful. What are the leaves like? Could it be an azalia? How tall is it? (And where can I get one?) It is a great find! Jerry

Hi, it's me again. How about azalea arborescens ? Jerry

Come to Ga - I know where there's a bunch !
I'll try to get a scan of the leaves.
I had my doubts on azalea (the ones in my garden have no scent & flowers are different) . . however the flowers are close to a couple of azalea arborescens pics I found on the web.

I found this in a patch of woods being cleared for development - tree up to 15 ft (possibly more) - sandy soil - sun most of the day - I dug a sample to plant . . . never smelled anything like it !!

Thanks for the input . . stay tuned

Brian

I doubted it was the arborescens as they don't normally have that long stamens and the flowers aren't that shape either. Besides, does it have a heliotrope like smell? I honestly have no idea what it is.

Go to East Coast Native Azaleas and I'm sure you will find it. Jerry

I take that back about the stamens. The colouring of the petals looks different in that picture to that of the arborescens. www.rhododendrons.com ask them to get a definitive answer.

Just saw this thread- Its a Rhododendron canescens. Common name is Peidmont Azalea. This plant has very fragrant pink flowers and its one of the larger native azaleas. (it can grow to 15 feet)

That sucks its going to be bulldozed for more developement.
