Greenville, SC Area - Help Needed

I just bought a home in Greenville County, S. Carolina, in area of Greer. I'm in some desperate need of advice and help.

I've always dreamed of having a beautiful garden, but have a totally no knowledge about plants and haven't had a good track record. The home we just bought is SCREAMING out for landscaping in the front, and I'd love to have a raised bed garden in the back. I don't know what will grow well in the clay soil, in the zone as well, what to plant that needs little care (and I can't kill easily), etc.

I don't know what plants would go well with others, how to lay out a plan, best place to get them, you get the picture.

Would love to know if there's a group, or even an individual with the love of gardening that would like to teach and help. I want to be hands on and learn rather than hire someone to do it for me.

You might want to check out the forums to see if there is one for your area. My SIL lives in rural Greer. She had to adjust to a whole new climate too!

Hey debelli (as they say here in SC)! I am near Greer too!
that is to say my address is Greer. We have a couple of acres, and we have been struggling with a garden for 3 years now. It is rewarding (that's why I'm on here - poking around looking for a stewed tomatoe recipe), but A LOT of hard work, and sometimes a lot of disapointment - bottom rot on the tomatoes this year has almost sent my poor DH over the edge!

Would love to chat and help you out if we can. I grew up in the country with very old fashioned parents so we did a lot of gardening and canning...... yet I still kill about half of what I plant!

Give me a shout if you're still on this board..... btw, looks like you've even got room for some chickens back there!

now, I've got to get those tomatoes worked up.....

kginsc - thanks for the reply. The LOT of hard work and still having trouble with all you know scares me a bit, I have a hard time with plants as it is. BUT, I have a willingness to learn. One thing I learned is, DON'T BUT PLANTS before you have to leave for an extended time. Needless to say, most of the plants I bought have bit the dust. Live and learn.
