We grow raspberries. We got them from a neighbor and she didn't know the variety. They fruit in the spring and fall and they multiply rapidly.
So...I can't give you any recommendations on varieties. But I can tell you they are worth the trouble - they will take over a large area if you let them and they do require some cane management to make them accessible. But the berries are worth it.

I love raspberries, but do tell me about the cane management. Stark Bros. has a few varieties I might look into. ALso, when you say they will take over a large area, how big is your patch?

We grew Doman Red at our last house. The first year we got a good handful and they were awesome. Then we moved....and I havent planted more. I did get some Triple Crown blackberries instead-i know they arent raspberries but they are supposedly more prolific.

We planted ours about 4 years ago. It was in mid-summer during the drought. The timing was terrible but that's when our neighbor gave us 10 roots. We planted them in two rows, about 10 feet long - 4 feet apart. They survived. They have spread to a patch about 15 feet long - 12 feet wide without distinguishable rows. Initially we put in fence stakes on either end of each row with a double row of wire to train them (or at least flop them over).
This year we plan to neaten them up into rows again - replant the canes popping up where we don't want them and build more substantial supports. We need to keep them tied up better. The canes get pretty heavy when they are fruiting. I really wanted something more attractive - wooden posts with wire supports and a nice mulched path between and around them. Maybe this year.
We gave a bunch of roots to a friend and he nows has a patch almost as large as ours after two years.
