Pruning Gardenias

I have 2 gardenias that were planted by the previous homeowner. They are in terrible shape, very leggy. My primary goal is to get them in better shape.

When is the earlist I can prune them heavily? My goal is to reshape the bushes and encourage new, more desirable growth. I am not concerned about losing bloom.
