Growing Rosemary

We had lunch at a restaurant a couple of weeks ago where there were two large clumps of rosemary. I would like to try some and am wondering if it would do ok on the west side of our house where it would get about 6 hours of sun in the summer. Much more shade in the winter. At the restaurant it was protected by the nearness of the building, also by a large oak tree. Since it has been there for at least 5 years, I assume even our very cold weather at times doesn't bother it. There would be a lot more sun on the south side of our house but I wouldn't get to see it as often. What do you think?
