Wax myrtle is a nice small tree, large shrub. Others include red cedar (juniperus virginiana) and some of the large hollies.

I was going to suggest Cherry Laurel, but everyone here hates them so. Arbor Vitae might do well also.

Magnolia grandiflora does very well in shaded spots. I know the image we all have when hearing the word magnolia is of large, wide spreading estate sized monsters. There are a lot of choices among magnolia cultivars. The cultivar 'Hasse' is much narrower than most Magnolias and it gets tall. Sea Palms Resort on St. Simons has some in a courtyard planting, very close to the buildings, and the width(or lack thereof!) of those trees is simply astounding. They provide height without intruding on anything around them. I think of magnolias as medium growth speed. I don't have personal experience with Hasse, it could be slower growing than others. Anyway, just an idea.
