I have tried to grow bluebells several time with no luck at all. I would be interested to hear if anyone has grown them

Do you mean the plant known as Spanish Bluebells or also called Wood Hyacinth? I grow them. They are a bulb that does very well in my shady backyard gardens. They bloom in March. You may not mean this plant.

Or did you mean Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica)?

I meant Virginia bluebells, but I'd try the Spanish ones as well. I'll try whichever will grow here best.

I have had no success keeping VA bluebells (Mertensia virginica) alive for more than a few years.
They require a shady, to partially shady location and very moist, acidic to slightly alkaline soil. As one author succinctly writes: "Cultivating this plant is a little like feeding and watering a sumo wrestler...".
I haven't given up yet! I have a shade bog, where I grow our native Jack-in-the-pulpits, among other plants, and I am hoping they will survive there.

I had to move mine last spring - the area was too dry and they were getting smaller every year. I am looking forward to spring this year to see if they do better (although I may have to wait yet another year to know for sure).
