Comments (0)my soil is mainly clay and we have a huge drainage problem. we have a drain with perforated pipe , gravel, etc works a little but not enough. what else could we do...See MoreClay soil
Comments (2)It shouldn't be just a little compost if this hasn't been worked in several years. Think more of 1 part compost to 1.5-2 parts existing soil, double digging it at least 1 ft deep with either a large garden fork by hand (wont harm earthworms) or a rototiller. adding a small amount of greensand will help too. I would have the soil tested before adding anything else. It also depends on what you're going to plant there, a vegetable bed needs more compost than a hedge....See Moreadvice for starting a new garden bed and improving soil
Comments (9)Your local nursery should be able to recommend a bagged organic compost, even Home Depot carries a brand of organic compost if there's no other choice. Worm castings are good too. You might want to post your questions on the gardenweb, or read the threads there, there's many gardeners willing to help http://www.gardenweb.com/gardenweb/query/Acidifying-soil...See MoreRhodo Help! Comments (7)I don't find moisture meters to be the least bit reliable. I think the physical touch is far more telling but you do need to get your fingers down deep....a least to the base of the rootball. If dry there, then you need to water. But if root rot, watering will not help....also won't hurt much either as root rot is not recoverable....See Morenippersdad
