Frogs and Toads

Hi, everyone!

Here are stories from my backyard.

1.For a long time I heard (and saw) Mockingbirds on my roof and porch roof. I was wondering what they are doing there. I just found out. One bird left porch roof and landed in front of my window  it was holding medium size Cuban Treefrog! It took a few pecks, picked up frog and flew away with it! I usually can see few Cuban Treefrogs in my gutters or under porch roof. I could not find even one today! Mockingbirds took care of them. I didnÂt know they do that.

2.My DH and I used to listen to very nice singing (whistling) in twilight. I heard it from my orchid pots! Here is the singer: meet Greenhouse Frog. ItÂs tiny critter, only about 1/2 inch long, no wonder I could not find it! Finally I managed to take a picture of it.

3.Digging in my garden I find from time to time these toads underground.

I thought itÂs Southern Toad but was not sure, so I sent pic. to UF and they ID-ed it as native Eastern Spadefoot Toads. ArenÂt they adorable?

    Great pictures!
We have dozens of the tiny greenhouse frogs. Sad to say, the cats love them and regularly bring them in from the patio.

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I keep adding broken pots to my garden to give the toads their own houses and they DO use them! They make nifty little lean to type places for them to get out of the shade.

    *applauding Ill-Man, here*

    Yes!

    Smash them on a box,
    Smash them wearing sox,
    Smash them here or there,
    You can smash them ANYWHERE!
(but only the CUBAN ones, of course...the rest are to be cherished!)

Great pictures, Maria. Glad to know what those wee little guys are. I have some, too.

Thanks early bird for those CUTE froggy pics. I LOVE frogs. Sometimes at night when I am at the computer I hear a thud on the window and turn around to see a frog on it:)

Ill-mannered and Marcia, are these the bad frogs? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_tree_frog
But they look so cute... I couldn't hurt one - I have a hard enough time stomping on the snails that eat my plants.

They are BEYOND bad, atreelady. They have nearly wiped out our beautiful native green treefrogs, and they eat anything they can shove in their mouths. They kill snakes, other frogs, and even baby birds. They don't belong here, and have become a terrible blight in our gardens, and if something doesn't happen soon, the green treefrog will become extinct. I loathe them.

    Our lovely green treefrog:

There are more humane ways to kill them for those who are squeamish, but I have no trouble sending them off to that Great FrogPond In The Sky with a swift whackity-whack, don't talk back, myself. (And I'm usually a live and let live kind of person.)

And believe me, when they are grown, they are NOT cute. They are often pasty-white, bloated and corpse-like. They make me shudder!

    Nasty Cuban treefrog:

I can't say enough about eliminating these creatures from our Florida gardens. Since I've killed most of the ones here, even my GREEN anole population is coming back. (They eat them, too, as if the green anoles didn't have enough trouble from the BROWN ones, also exotics.)

Well now I don't feel so bad now for accidentally eliminating some when I cleaned my fountain (their home it turned out) with chlorine.

I guess it's time for frog legs and escargot?

I say chlorinate the bejeebers outta 'em! Whatever works!!

Unfortunately, I think the Cubans have done in all my toads and southern green frogs. When the girl next door abandoned her house and pool, they started breeding in the pool, and now I have no toads. My little toady houses were so lonely, I planted things in them. I miss my toadies, and especially my green trees frogs, which were everywhere when I moved here 10 years ago. In just a few years, the Cubans have done away with all my frogs.

    O.K., I'm getting sad again. :(

I have loads of the Little Green Tree Frogs and absolutely love to sit outside and listen to them. I just planted two more scheffelaera (spelling?) under my bedroom window and they absolutely love to get in them and sing ..

My problem Toad Im unsure of what it was but my 5 month old puppy ate a toad a few days ago and was so sick she didnt eat for the last 4 days and we almost lost her. Not sure what it was but we are keeping a closer watch on whats in the yard now as far as our little critter friends out there. Sandy on the other hand is finally eating again and we are hoping we can get some wieght back on her since she lost a good bitbut she is running and jumping and playing again so we are happy to have her back to being active.

Very nice pixs of frogs n' toads, earlybird! I love our native amphibs here. Oh, and I have a frog story to share....

I had one of those hideous Cuban frogs get into my bedroom one night about two weeks ago. There was a small gap in the screen frame (fixed now) and he somehow squeezed in. I was woken to the sound of a thud on my wall, another thud on the second wall, and then "SPLAT!!!" the little !#$*!!! jumped to the ceiling, missed, and landed on ME. I shall not share the location of the landing zone. *G*

This was about one in the morning. I was NOT amused. At all. My cats were going nuts, but I managed to grab the pasty white ghost frog, go out into the back yard barefooted, whereby I almost immediately stepped in dog poop. I flung the hideous thing like a major league outfielder and it landed in the middle of the lake. I hope the fish pecked at him for a really lonnnnnggggg time.

Oh I do hate those evil things.

When I was down south working for the vet in Jensen Beach we used to tell people to put them (both Cuban and Bufo) in a freezer bag and freeze them to death, so that might be an option for the more squeamish.

Note the big toe pads on the Cubans, it makes them easy to id. Since we started removing them from the garden, we have so many other frogs and the green lizzards have returned. I am a baby can't do the killing, but I call in my back up and he has no problem elimating the pest. :o)

Great photo's of the other little guys. Sadly, I don't think I've seen the green treefrog.

Now we have a new problem, the Knight anoles.

I was poking around my containers last night and pulling the grass from between them, and sometimes in them, and found a large, lovely toad hanging out. I didn't want to get him jumping around 'cause my dog was hanging out, but he was cute. Probably a Bufo.

AuntieJan, I would rather wake up with a six foot snake sliding across my feet than have one of those Cuban treefrogs splat down on me in the dark!! YUCK!!! What a shock! I wouldn't have been amused, either. But it makes for a great story later, doesn't it?

I just had to share this picture of my DD with a frog that her and her big brother found in the pool a while back. I have no idea what kind it is. She was the only one "brave" enough to pick it up. It unfortunatly died a short while later and they gave it a proper burial.

Marcia, I said a few colorful words when that thing landed on me! And stepping in the poop was just insult to injury LOL! But yep it's a funny story now... it sure wasn't then!
