Destroy the surface of the nest on a daily basis and they just might move away.

I would try pouring a kettle of boiling water on the nest daily.

We had problems with ants in our compost also. I checked a reference book on composting which says the compost pile is too dry if ants are a problem. We relocated our bin (turning and wetting layers) and so far, with more moisture the ants haven't returned.

If relocating your bin is not an option, drowning the nest may get them to move. I think if you want to get rid of the ants permanently, more drastic measures are required.

I did some researching on the Georgia Cooperative Extension website and they have had success with feeding uncooked grits to fire ants. NO JOKE! (This isnt instant grits)

Have you tried the grits! What does it do to them?

It's supposed to expand inside of them & they die from terminal gas or something.

Ants do not eat solid foods in that manner...I should say CAN'T eat. This myth is busted ;-)

You may have misinterpreted a report that mentions that corn cob grits are used as part of the bait in insecticides. The grits absorb the toxins which are then carried down into the mound and fed to the larva. These larvae predigest the poisoned grit solid, and then regurgitate it back to the adults. Dead ants result.

I have read a few things recently about molasses being used to kill fire ants. Does anyone know anything about that? I though of trying it but was a little worried that it might just draw sweet-eating ants instead. I don't want to exchange one problem for another.

This does seem to be a bad year for fire ants, though. They are everywhere.

I just had a convo about this w/a friend regarding yellowjackets. She SWEARS that using Bounce Dryer sheets works. She just puts them around the area.

Orthrene by Ortho...white chemical powder that smells like rotten cabbage...and it kills within an hour not simply forcing the ants to move elswhere.

I have 3/4 acre and have tried the grits and boiling water...simply not very effective when your dealing with multiple or large nests.

Some of theses ideas are quite usefull while others are just plain hillarious. I especially like the "two wooden block" method of ant control.
