trellis plant suggestions?

Hi y'all!

I'm think about putting up a trellis to hide all the meters and electrical boxes and whatnot that are on the western side of my house. It's a steep slope with good drainage that gets afternoon sun. I'd like to put some sort of perennial on it that will (a) have flowers and (b) not take over the yard.

We bought a house with some very overenthusiastic English ivy that grows on anything that sits still for too long and we've been tearing it out ever since. (My fiance has taken to calling it British kudzu.) So that's kind of dampened my enthusiasm for anything that will run away with the place.

Does anyone have any suggestions for something that wouldn't be too much for a newbie gardener to plant? I'm not opposed to the occasional trim, but I'd just as soon steer clear of anything that'll shoot up and start knocking on the windows to say hello like the ivy does.
