I have a couple lewisias in a pot in my driveway and would love to have more. Try growing it in a rocky trough garden. Mine are potted up in very sandy soil and do just fine. I've had them for 3 or more years.

Thanks for the quick reply Westender. I've never been good with pots,as much as I love them.
I read that they'll do well on a sunny sandy hillside, I gather that they'll get rot in the wet (usually wet) winters we have. I have only lost a couple of plants to wet winters, of all the lavenders I've tried only the Spanish seems to shrug off the winters.

You're right, they don't like wet winters and need perfect drainage. I used to grow them from seed, collected by a late friend in Northern Calif. Once had a huge one in my rockgarden. One day I noticed it was in bud, ready to bloom. The next morning I went out to admire it in bloom. Gone! The entire plant had been cut off at ground level and no trace of it was ever found. That ended my relationship with Lewisia.

My intent is not necessarily to grow things in pots, it's just that often I don't get around to putting them in the ground. I bought my lewisias intending to make hypertufa troughs for them and for the sedums I love so much. Unfortunately that has not happened yet. Instead, I stumbled across some nice bonsai pots (low and flat, about 2 inches tall) that some person with more money than sense was throwing out in Buckhead, and planted those up with the lewisia and sedums. I used a really sandy and pebbly mix, with (as I recall) only a third or so of actual soil. These pots are still sitting in my driveway, which is a located on a pretty steep slope on the west side of my house and thus gets lots of hot afternoon sun. I guess because of the size and shape of the pots, the soil/sand mixture, the slope and the sun, the pots have perfect drainage and that probably explains why my lewisias are still alive.

Sometimes a little neglect is a good thing, I suppose. If I had built the deep troughs and transplanted as planned, the lewisias would probably be dead now!

I found them at a nursery in Sugar Hill off Peachtree Industrial if you really want to get some. they are serious show-offs!
