Has anyone heard of or tried enameled mead gardening? As I understand it - and I couldn't find a lot of information - it is creating designs with flowers planted in the lawn. The grass is kept trimmed lower than the flowers so the design stands out. I think the designs are supposed to look like enamel when it's done, but am not sure. Anyone know anything about this?
I grow daffodils in rough grass with mowed paths; when the daffodil foliage yellows, it's cut and all returns to grass. BTW, it isn't in the front lawn.
You might try sowing English daisies and some other cool season annuals for an early mead effect. It would probably work best in a field of annual rye grass, which will die down when the weather turns hot.
I have read about enameled mead in a Richard Jury mystery by Martha Grimes title "Old Winds Of Change". It does not have tall flowers only short ones close to the ground.Pansies and snow drops were mentioned as well as cutting the surrounding grass by hand, lower than the flowers which were planted to look like an enameled piece of jewelry.Sounds pretty to me. I think I'll try it in my garden next spring.
I just got on this site to find out what"enambled mead" was as I am reading Martha Grimes book also. The title is "The Winds of Change" and is a good read if you can get into the english writing style.
I remember seeing this post when sugarhill originally wrote it. She died very suddenly, I think about three years ago. Glad to see her thoughts reappearing. She was a lovely person and a devoted gardener - was my intro to lasagna gardening.
I am enchanted to find all these questers sent by Martha Grimes' Winds of Change! What a wonderful researcher she is. I'm glad to be part of this parade of fellow readers! Wishing you all good reading, good gardening, and successful researches.
