Large loropetalum -- to prune or not to prune???

Hi all. I was given a huge loropetalum (about 5 feet high with similar spread) last year that I had to dig out of someone's yard and transplant last fall. It still felt like summer at the time so not surprisingly it went into shock. This thing was extremely full and round and basically looks dead except for a little bit of new growth near the base.

I'm wondering if I should just cut this thing down to the ground now to encourage new growth. It doesn't look like it will be in any shape to bloom this year anyway so I'm not worried about losing the blooms by pruning this time of year. Should I get happy with the pruners (or possibly chainsaw lol) or not and if yes, how severely?

Appreciate any advice. Sincerely, Squirrellypete
