New doorway, what would you plant?

Our new house is far from done, but the siding's almost on and the kitchen doorway doesn't need grading, so I can plant something there. The door's in middle of a north-northeast facing 1-1/2-story wall, and only has about 4' to one side, where the ground drops away to our some-day entry garden.

For the foreseeable future, this door will open onto a moderate-sized lawn area overlooking a small meadow and surrounded with picket fence and fruit trees, with sunny borders along the fence dedicated to a handful of specific favorite shrubs, perennials, and bulbs. Winter view, with plants to help create it, is the main plan.

Anyway, I'm trying to come up with ideas for something special to espalier or grow up a trellis along one side of, and over, the door, as well as for an evergreen shrub (up to 4-5' tall) to grow at its feet on each side. Style will be relaxed and fairly rural, but I want to consider any and every wonderful plant for this special spot so I thought I'd ask you guys for your ideas. ??
