Help! Squirrels!

I have a problem with a squirrel chewing off a small shrub at the base, and why did he do it? He chewed off two nandinas at ground level and left them. No sign of hin digging into the roots. It looked like a beaver had come along and did it. I know it was a squirrel because I caught him chewing off pieces of my Christmas Cactus and eating it. Haven't found any other shrubs that have been chewed on yet, but he gets frisky in my flower beds and flower pots. He/she raised a family in the top of a pine tree in my yard last year, and he is quite tame. Cute, but, I can't have him playing havoc in my flower beds.
