I'm on bedrest--no gardening!

I went into premature labor last weekend, and after lots of lovely medications, the contractions subsided. No baby, thank goodness. But I'm on bedrest for the rest of my pregnancy (7 weeks until the due date.) My hubby has set me up with a laptop, so I can garden vicariously through you guys. This will give me ample time to plan out that herb/fragrance garden I've been wanting to do.

Take care!

I have several friends over the years who went through bed rest. The seven weeks will go by faster than you think. Then you'll have seven weeks (at least) when you think you'll never get rest again.
Last year I ripped out my foundation planting and replaced it with a scent garden. The only thing I left from the original planting was a camellia (no scent, but way too pretty to take out or move). It's a partial shade, partial sun location so I ended up with two daphne odoras for late winter scent, three gardenias for early summer, and five Royal Standard hostas for late summer. I have a confederate jasmine growing up the side of the porch for spring scent. I love having a scent garden.
All the plants are fairly small right now, so I filled in last summer with annual salvia and with a huge container filled with asparagus fern. I'm thinking about moving my Bridal Veil phlox to that garden this year too.
As it turns out, this also became a white garden, so I added some hellebores with cream blooms for winter/spring and filled in the really shady spots with Southern shield fern (which right now look like they croaked over the winter).
Hope you have a great time planning your scent garden. Maybe you can use some of these suggestions.

I am sure the bedrest will go quickly and both you and baby will be fine. As far as scented plants go, well, other people have far better ideas than i do. However, for the past few weeks whenever i have been to HD to get stuff (only mulch and household repair items, honest!) i have been blown away by the sent of the pink jasamine that they have on sale. I can smell it before i even see it. I don't think it is cold hardy, but, boy it sure does smell good!

FWIW--I went through the bedrest bit with my first two--fine and healthy!--and then when I was pregnant again I read somewhere that sometimes it's because your thyroid is low, not necessarily dramatically so, just some. So I asked the doctor about it, and he checked me and my last two pregnancies were 'bedrest free' with the addition of thyroid. Much easier. I'm sure that's not the only reason such things happen, but if you haven't been checked out it might be worth it. Of course as has been said you'll need the rest in a few weeks!

Thanks for the encouraging words! I'll have to ask about the thyroid thing.

Thanks for the part sun ideas, too. The last time I checked the area, it was only getting about 3-3.5 hours of sun. I think the sun's path changes a bit, so I may have a little more in summer, but probably not full sun. So much for the herbs!

I think that some herbs will grow without full sun. Mint, for instance. But keep it contained in pots or it will take over!

Lemon verbena has a fantastic scent and I have grown it in a pot in part sun. Of course it would be happier in full sun but lots of things will make do with whatever sun they can get.

Some of the daffodils are fragrant, and if your "part sun" is in the shade of deciduous trees, they will grow just fine with the winter sun they get there. And I think grape hyacinths (muscari) are also fragrant - I know at least some of mine are.

My garden is very fragrant out in the front:
Bath's Pink dianthus has a gorgeous spicey scent right now, Armandii clematis, many of the bearded iris are scented...
Roses, of course, brugmansia are heavenly. 4 O'clocks although they can be weedy (but I love them still), lilies - WOW they can pack a whallop. Ginger of course. There is the white ginger but if you check out the Plant Delights web page, you'll see all kinds of amazing gingers that also bloom early (especially the Thai types). I can not wait to get my greedy fingers on those!!
Hyacinth are also beautifulyl scented. They don't bloom for a long time, but the mixture of hyacinths and daffs is intoxicating on warm, early spring afternoon!!

    Hi,
Last year I finally got to plant in my raised beds. I have 4 center beds that I planted with various theme plants. My favorite was the bed with the scented geraniums. I had one of each variety that I could find (The Pottery in Commerce has such a selection) and I planted them around the edge of the bed.
I also had a bed with all lemon scented plants.

Been there, done that! Bedrest does seem like forever, but it will pass. And the doctor will usually let you get up as soon as you reach full term, so you wonÂt be trapped for seven weeks.

Poor hubby: you have all this time to plan your garden, and he gets to prepare it for you. I remember spending a lot of time in the backyard on a bench or towel directing my husband while on bedrest. And I think my youngest had been to Pikes, Home Depot, Lowes and a couple of other nurseries before she was two weeks old.

Ha Ha! My hubby has already made it clear that he will not be planting this bed for me. It's ok. I had planned on doing the lasanga bed thing to have some nice workable soil in there by Fall. I figured I wouldn't have much time with a newborn until then anyway (and I already have a 2 year old boy.)

I love all these great ideas. The bed is pretty small. I think about 3'X12'. I think I may have a place for my full sun herbs elsewhere, so I can happily plant some part sun things here. I love the lemon and ginger ideas. I can just imagine the yummy scents! The one thing my hubby has agreed to do is put a little path by here, so we'll be able to walk by and really enjoy it.
    Thanks again, y'all!

    Hi Pam
Hope things are going ok for you and the baby. it is so hot outside, being out there has been somewhat of a challenge today, as I had 40 bales of pine straw to put down! Inside was painting, so i did about 45 minutes of each and have just finished the painting and need 5 bales of pine straw to finish off. Hope the plans are coming along. Let us know what you have decided.

My doctor expects to take me off bedrest and the medication at the end of this week--woohoo! Of course, at 8 months pregnant, I would still need to limit gardening in my sloping yard.

As far as that bed...I still don't know what in the world to do. I think it's in sun from noon to 3 or so. I've thought about maybe a perennial border, and try to include some of your fragrant suggestions. Hmmm...

Good luck. I know that's been hard with all the beautiful weather we've had.
