Theoretically the hanging technique will work but I think it is a little risky. You can pull them up and pack them together in a box or large pot with a bit of old compost around them. They don't need to be potted individually. They don't need to be watered in the winter but try not to let the compost totally dessicate.They should be OK in a cold greenhouse most of the time but they might need extra help in cold snaps e.g a frost watch heater or some layers of newspapers. In the spring cut them back repot and feed. (You could cut them back in Autumn but I prefer spring as the old stems offer a little extra protection.)

I live 1 hour from you and actually left some (Pelargoniums) Geraniums out all last winter and they survived. But they were close to the house and sheltered. In Salisbury they should be fine as I've outlined above.

Hi floral, thanks for your great advice. It's good to have advice from someone in the same part of the country because of weather conditions etc.... I shall do as you suggest and put them in a box with some old compost. Nothing lost by trying eh?

Pelargoniums are very easy from cuttings so you could end up not just with the plants you have this year but even more. Just Google for instructions. It's very straightforward.

How do you know the plants you carry over are not carry bacterial diseases? I ' ve been told you have to send it in.

Hi thunderbolt. They are geraniums I have been growing in my own garden this year. I'm not taking them to another country or anything. They are only travelling as far as my garden shed lol

thunderbolt39 - averil is in the UK. As far as I know bacterial blight on pelargoniums is not a problem disease here and I haven't found any references to it. It certainly isn't notifiable.

I over winter my geranium in bottle of water in my south window , then I put it in garden when its warm, have had same plant three yes now, :-)
