Hi,
I have grown lavendar in raised beds for many years and I've never had any real problems with it. Last year I planted several different varieties and they all did well. My Spanish Lavendar is especially beautiful this year. All of my plants are in the full sun, which they seem to prefer and my beds have great drainage, which lavendar needs.

lavender lady? Lavender or lilac?

Sorry! I should have been more specific...my question is in reference to Lavender, not lilacs.

Lavenders love full sun so you should be fine. I am astounded that my Spanish lavender is doing so well - it's not really syupposed to be hardy here. I have some Lavender Lady in pots - they are still hardly more than twigs, but they may do better for me in pots than in my clay! Maybe I'll get ambitious and construct raised beds.

I also pine for lovely rows of lavender. In my experience, Spanish lavendar is the only kind that thrives in our climate. Lavendar doesn't like moisture on it's leaves. Try mulching the plant with a layer of fine gravel or sand. This will allow sun to reflect off the ground onto the leaves and keep them dry. Provide excellent drainage and only water them if they show signs of wilting. These are the most drought resistant plants I have ever grown. Good luck!
