Walter Reeves (on his show) suggests that you do one of two things: either dig up the root, wrap them in papertowels (or a sock or cloth and store them inside a shed, garage or other, then re-plant in the spring, OR cover the area above the roots with a good layer of pine straw to control the temprature surrounding the area.

Right... so, if mulched well, they should come back here in the Atlanta area. I'll keep an eye on it. I'd imagine it should start growing mid-May.

"Elephant ears" is a general term that apply to a variety of specific plants. If you have the big green ones that grow from a clump/tuber - I have found them to be hardy. There are other ones (often sold in the inside gardening section of Home Depot) that are more decorative and they may not be hardy.

I also have had the dark colored foliage ones that grow from runners (Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic' is one cultivar)- it is also hardy but doesn't always come back in the same spot (and babies will pop up several feet away).

i had one come up wild in my yard - the ginormous ones that are medium green with dark green veins. no clue where in the world it came from (byproduct of leaf scrounging, again? not sure how that'd be possible).

it lasted through two winters with no covering at all, sans a sparse patchy layer of wood mulch.

i wound up digging it up and giving it to a neighbor because it didn't fit in our landscape. my wife wanted to shoot me. it was one of her favorite plants in the landscape - i just couldn't find a suitable place for it.

Ha.. cool. yes, it's a Colocasia, the big ones that are quite impressive in the landscape, we liked it so much that I've added some more to the backyard. Sounds like it'll come back. I do have one of the smaller more decorative ones as well. That one did come in from the deck and will go back out in a few weeks. Thanks for the feedback.
