Sugarhill, I'm ready to oust this one out of my garden. It is BALL CITY here already this spring. Very annoying. I can not imagine it being suited to a container since mine is 1.5 years old and is about 8' tall or more and growing. It is pinned to a narrow trellis which is slowly being made into a rose tunnel.

Wow, GGG. What kind of containers are the people at Chamblee and ARE using if they think this is a good container plant? Could you have accidentally purchased something called Giant Colossal Mutant Perle d'Or from Three Mile Island nursery? Maybe it's time I considered The Fairy, although I haven't found one of those either.

The Fairy will soon grow to Giant Colossal Mutant size too. I've grown that one and it sends out loooong canes that root where they touch the ground.

Try Northside Garden Center in Buford. They have lots of nice roses.

The Perle d'Or looks a little sad, GGG. I'd pull it out and make room for something else too. I talked to the people over at Goodness Grows today, and now I'm thinking about Julia Child or Livin' Easy. Anyone tried those roses? After hearing how many thorns The Fairy has, I chucked it from the list.

Twinkle, I'm only a couple of miles from Northside and went by there yesterday. They're expecting a big rose shipment in a couple of weeks.

Sugarhill, if you see Glynis's last post, she noticed that the rose that gets balled up flowers is Perle d'Jardin. I was wondering how could it be that Perle d'Or could have gotten so big when it's really not supposed to be so big. I think it may even be a polyantha.

Perle D'Or is a rose I may try (but first have to pull out some less well-performing item to make room) because it's pretty and is one of the "Earthkind" roses -- a trial garden list of roses that will take tons of neglect and still look good (they also include The Fairy, Katy Road Pink, and Belinda's Dream). The blooms are small but shapely like a Cecile Brunner.

The Fairy is thorny but it stays below 4' tall (though gets wide) and is a good workhorse rose.

I have Rev d'Or and it's the only one left blooming after the big freeze. And the blooms are beautiful. But I think it gets huge.

Livin' Easy is a great rose. I have one from Lindagail, and just bought another from Chamblees. I want Julia Child. All reports say she is so disease resistant!

As for another really easy rose, please consider La Marne. it is larger, but makes a lovely small shrub. Almost never out of bloom, recovers from BS and Japanese Beetles faster than any other, and so easy. No spray. Lindagail turned me on to that one too!

I've had Perle d'Or in a pot for three years and it's done very well. Doesn't get too big, not much BS, very delicate, nice fragrance. Hope you can find it!

I also have La Marne. It is very easy to grow. I give it no care other than clipping off the faded blooms. It is the first rose to bloom in my garden, and also the last.

If you want lush, cabbagey roses try Belinda's Dream. I have several of these. It's a medium-sized shrub and has light pink roses that are packed with petals. It is one of the best roses for this area. It is constantly in bloom for me, sometimes in large flushes, sometimes not, but always has a couple of blooms. Northside Gardens has it.

I don't know how you feel about chemicals, but you could make any rose "disease resistant" by using a systemic product. I use Bayer all-in-one granules that fertilize, protect against disease, and protect against bugs. You just sprinkle them on top of the soil every three months. Easy!

I'm going over to Goodness Grows today with a friend. If they have a Perle d'Or left over from last year (they couldn't get any this year), that's what I'll get. I know they do have Julia Child and Livin' Easy. I'll look to see if they have Belinda's Dream or La Marne. Already I wish I could get more than one, but I'd have to cut down trees in my yard and all my neighbors' yards to find more sun. Bummer.
So now, guys, how do you care for a rose in a container? Anything special to do?

Perle d'Or is a wonderful and easy rose to grow, fragrant, healthy, good rebloom. For long term growing in a pot, think half whiskey barrel size and eventually some pruning.

Some other small growers you might consider for growing in a large pot-Borderer, Mignonette, White Pet, Katarina Zeimet, Marie Pavie, Marie Daly, Paquerette, all smaller polyanthas with fragrance.

I got Perle d'Or! Yeah!!!!! The had two little one-gallon Perles at Goodness Grows, and I got one of them. Also got a couple of clematis and some campanulas and a plant I never heard of. They had never heard of it or tired it either - so I figured why not find about it along with them. Can't even think right now what it's called. I'm sure I'll be asking ya'll questions about it soon. I know that even if something is new to a nursery half of you are already growing it.
Now off to get the Perle d'Or, which already has some fat buds, into its container.
P.S. If you ever eat at The Grill in Athens, don't get the Mediterranean burger.

Glad you got it. A co-worker that I've enabled into roses recommended this nursery, but I looked online and they don't have Perle.

Be careful Sugarhill, roses are addictive! For container roses, all I know is that you must feed them more often than roses in the ground. But some of the 'for roses' foods may be too strong for containers. I would use Miracle Gro bloom buster.

The good think about pots is that you can move the around (and bring them inside when it's 24 degrees in April!).

Just an update on the Perle d'Or. I planted it in its container Saturday morning, and it already has new growth. Weeheeee!!! (And on a sadder - but somehow more typical - note, I've already killed one of the jasione I picked up last Friday. Since I didn't do anything to it, I'm thinking it was so pot bound that it wasn't taking in any of the water I was giving it.)
