The American Rose Society articles, in general are excellent. I recommend you read about blackspot, rose mosaic virus and other problems. This is not to scare you off, just to educate you on what might be happening in your garden, and how to "fix" it. I grow many, many roses and have no problems. Neither does a friend a few blocks away. We tend to stick to either antique roses or "easy" ones on the list above.

Right now I have a mixture of climbing, shrub and minature roses (they get disease but survive). Some roses "climb" in our climate simply because of the extra growing time allowed. I would plant the roses right now so the roots can acclimatize before the heat begins. Early spring and fall are the best time to plant roses here.

Your yellowing rose leaves could be for a variety of reasons. Blackspot is a possibility. We've had quite a bit of rain and some muggy days already. They may need to be fed. Regular fertilizer is fine, Mills Rose Magic is fantastic. I use a mixture of alfalfa pellets and fish fertilizer myself.

If you want to be as natural as possible, you could find Serenade to use as a spray. It's wonderful and not too expensive. Some Wal-Marts carry it.

I agree with girlgroupgirl. Go ahead and plant your roses now. We get hot so quickly here that it would be better to have to protct them if we get another frost than wait till later. Altho I have planted roses well into the summer when I have gotten good deals from several internet sites. Use a good rose food when you plant them and it will help keep them strong.
