I was born in Augusta, Georgia in 1941. It was a different world back then what with no air conditioning, no TV and no rock and roll. We never dreamed of putting a man on the moon, computers, cell phones and the like. I even remember cars with running boards and Burma Shave signs and on and on like that. Back then if you asked about someones garden they told you about their vegetable garden. It is just lately that our entire yards became referred to as gardens. Personally I think we need to strike a compromise where our flower and ornamentals are intermingled with vegetables and berry bushes plus a fruit bearing tree or two even though I have seen some yards today that didn't seem big enough to support a tree. I never see kids outside anymore unless they're waiting on the school bus. What do they do with all that time inside? How do they get any exercize?
Anyway, welcome to Georgia and remember I was here first so I'm not the one with the accent. (All in good humor) . My jonquils have finished blooming, my tulips look great, The latest freeze damaged the leaves on a mulberry and a Japanese magnolia but they are already recovering. This is the year I hope to harvest pineapple guava, pomegranate, mayhaw, pawpaw, plums, blueberries, 2 edible fruit dogwoods: cornus mas and cornus kousa, Oriental plus seedless American persimmons, figs, and including a host of vegetables. I will be selling lettuce at the Marietta Farmers Market in May. I am in the Garden Writers Association, been a Master Gardener since 1980, and belong to some more local and national garden-related organizations. I am into yard art, edible landscaping and native plants to name a few. I have written a childrens book and produced a professional studio recorded CD of ten songs I wrote. Of course it's taken a lifetime to do all this.

Welcome, Alison! I grew up near you (went to Berkmar), but live downtown now. I remember Pleasant Hill as a two lane road. Gwinnett has changed a lot in the last couple of decades, but itÂs still a great place to garden.

Welcome! I did not grow up in Georgia, but in zone 5b in Canada. Gardening for me down here was a whole new experience!!
Aren't the lilies way big for this time of year? They are coming up and growing as quickly as they do in Canada. It must be warm days/cool nights.

Hey, Alison. Good to see you here. I think we've met on another site. Gwinnett here, on the outskirts of Dunwoody. Baseball (GGBL) and gardening make up much of my life this time of year, too.
It's been so mild. But I'm pleased that it seems like spring is really here. I'm moving up winter and inside sown plants and preparing new terraced beds and doing serious cleaning-up/weeding. Whewwww...I'm completely exhausted but it feels good to get back outside and see the perennials coming back up and woody plants leafing out.

I'm another transplant, an empty-nester from Southern California, building a house and starting a new garden up in North Hall County a good 10+ degrees colder than where you are and where when I say garden my neighbors STILL think I mean a veggie patch. In that spirit (California style, but still...), my son just gave me a bench for my birthday, so right now I'm digging up a little culinary herb garden to set it in the middle of. First plant to go in will be a baby clove current in the corner, only a high right now, but with amazingly fragrant flowers.

I have been in Georgia for 3 and a half years now and don't know where I would be without all the great folks on this forum. I transplanted here from Illinois and am loving the longer growing seasons. I am definitely what you would classify as an obsessed gardener. I grow a little bit of everything with no real specialty, but I live and breath gardening most of the year. You will find this to be a very helpful, supportive group of people.

Well gardening and baseball and the 5 small kids take up all my time.. Too bad I don't like to do housework as much as I like to garden...
Lately baseball has been taking up all my time 5 kids play and I coach one team and commissioner of the 11-12 league that + not enough garden time.. I was glad to have spring break to get things done in that yard and then that nasty storm came last Friday/Sat and my pinestraw is all askew now.. I better get my priorities straight.. ;)

I'm with you - I'll garden before housework anyday! I sure am enjoying these cool mornings for the gardening. Welcome to the Georgia Gardening group.

I've lived in the E. Cobb/Roswell area for the last 6 years, transplanted from Michigan VIA New England. I don't specialize in any type of plant - unless its the spontaneous purchased plant. Garden nursery shopping is the only shopping I like to do!

This year I am concentrating on creating better bones in my garden. I have lots of fun stuff but not very good bones. I only managed to plant one of the three trees I wanted to plant this winter, so it looks like it will be slower going than I'd hoped - as usual. Now that things have sprouted I find more weed sprouts than I've ever seen in my life! I'll be spending the next two weeks on my hands and knees digging in the dirt. I won't skip the preen this time before I lay down the new mulch.

Seems like most people you meet are not born in Georgia...(?)...interesting to hear why/how they chose this state...I've heard alot, from: "Moved here for the golf courses" to "Well, my son wanted to go to college here, so we just decided to move here." etcs.

Alison- I'm in the Lilburn area as well. I'm looking forward to this spring and summer. Last year was a complete gardening washout. I replaced my septic tank and drainfield (twice!). I started in January and finished in August. All my money went into the ground and my plants went into pots. This winter I had a designer layout the yard and I'm having sod laid on the first of May, so things are looking up. Warm weather and new leaves are so theraputic!
