That Bullrush will grow in soil, clay, or mud. I grow several submerged in a water barrel and some outside the water. I also like them in the center of potted plants to give height. The only thing they really seem to require is sun and moist soil. Submerged plants I have, have been sumbmerged for three years and are now about three and a half feet tall. They seem to do best in less than 6 inches of water when submerged. The nice thing is, that this one seems to be evergreen with very few spikes turning brown over winter.
While I am unsure of it's botanical classification I would think it is either Shoenoplectus pungens or S. americanus if you want to find further information.
