Their best bet is to look around and check out the best looking lawns in the area. Sometimes the type of soil and exposure can be a lot different from a nearby area. Clay type soil is a lot different than the sandy soil that's common in some areas.

Centepede and St Augustine have been the favorites for a long time, but the recent dought conditions has been hard on Centepede. Centepede does not like fertilizer, but it does need more water that St. Augustine. Both it and the St. Augustine are usually sprigged or sodded. Bermuda is drought resistant and can be seeded. But it's a hateful thing to have to pull out of flower beds. It's not as pretty as the others.

I grew up in Glynn Co. and owned a landscape business there as well. From that experience, a blended lawn of centipede and St Augustine worked best. Some years the centipede seemed to dominate, other years the St. Augustine. In either event, you always had a nice grass lawn.

We installed the blend by sprigging or plugging rather than sodding. In that climate, it fills in fast and establishes better.

I recommend St. Augustine. My mom lives near the Fla./Ga border (in FL.) and she has had great success with St. Augustine.
