I am under the impression that we should take them off in the morning when the sun comes up. A gardener friend this weekend suggested they should be uncovered within two hours of sun-up. Anyway, that's what I'm going to do. Hope this helps.

As long as the plants can breath, that any moisture vapor can scape it should be ok I think. But if you cover things with plastics, definitelt you should uncover them if it is sunny.9GREENHOUSE EFFECT)

I covered mine with lots of leaves and pine straw. I don't think that the sunshine will be that hot to bake the annualls underneath, especially if it is windy. The winds can cool off more than the sun can raise the temperature.

I check the hourly forecast. It is going to be windy (15 to 21 mph). And the High in mid 40sF. So it is not going to get that hot uner the sheet or leaves to burn the plants.
If, say, its was in 60s and there were no winds I would uncover my plants. But low temperature combind with high winds cannot creat heat under the cover.

Of course, that is how I think.

Thanks all! I have never covered plants before - simply did not have that much to cover. It is a first year that I have invested a lot of time and money in planting material.

Tonight should be last freez hurdle.
AccuWeathe is forcastin a low of 30F for Duluth. not bad.
But strangley says " Watch for hard freez"
It doen't make sense to me. How in the heck can you get hard freez when the low is only 30F??

Anyway, I have covered my cold sensatine plants yesterday and I have left them cover. Tomorrow, before sun gets higher , I will uncover everyting. Lets hope that freez threat is over for this year..

The next 15 day forecast looks good. Some night temperatures will be in low 50s and the rest around mid 40s. This should helf the ground temperature to rise and the show will begin.

From now on, I will start all my seeds directly in the garden. This way , although they may grow somewat slowly but will acclimate to outdoor and there will be no need for hardening them

Well I had a hard freeze in my yard at 30. It was 36 when I went to bed at about 11. At 5:30 am it was 30. So it couldn't have been that cold for that long. Still my two hydrangeas that were too big to cover are toast. They looked fine this morning, but now the leaves are black and limpy. But my Japanese Maples appear to be ok as do most of my roses.

Most of the things covered or uncovered are just fine. Few hydrangeas a bit touched by the frost, however the fig tree leaves are totally done. Hope the tree survives...

Two nights in a row chilled down the gardens.

As I mentioned previously, I covered my cold sensative annuals with leaves and pine straw and they survived.
I forgot to cover some pole beans and they got bit by the frost. After two nirht of being under cover , some of the plants (potatoes and squashes) wer turning pale and were geting some shock under sunshine after being uncovered.
But all in all it turned out OK.

Now it is the time to go full throttle and plant as much as possible right in the garden and let the show begin.
